I like the list. I'm glad to see Tom Waits checking in at #4 and David Bazan making the cut. However, I don't fully agree with the order, or the inclusion of some songwriters, even some that I like, that resulted in the exclusion of others. To begin, why are John/Taupin at #23 while Patty Griffin is at #19? Why was Ryan Adams (#43) included in the list? Sure, his songs are ok, but a top 100 Songwriter? Above James Taylor (#53) and Cat Stevens (#49)?!?! Why are The Flaming Lips(#81) above Fleetwood Mac (#83), let alone even on this list? Why is Rivers Cuomo not on the list? I agree he hasn't really written a good song since Pinkerton, but it's not like Bono writes good songs anymore either (and U2 still made #18).
What do you think?

The Flaming Lips are above Fleetwood Mac because
1) Fleetwood Mac have been dull since Jeremy Spencer left to join the Children of God. I think all the drugs might have something to do with this.
2) Even in the Spencer/Green days, Fleetwood Mac have never created a song as heart-rending as "Do You Realize?" I think all the drugs might have something to do with this as well.
1) "Dull"? Maybe lacking a comedic element, but I don't think I would describe Rumours as "dull".
2) Either a) you go by a different description of "heart-rending" or b) you aren't talking about Fleetwood Mac. What about "Silver Springs" or "Man of the World" or even "Dreams"?
I like the Flaming Lips, and I like "Do you Realize?" but ranked higher than Fleetwood Mac and more heart-rending?
Ugh. I'm having flashbacks to Broken Sparrow's rendition of "Yoshimi vs. the Pink Robots."
Chris, John/Taupin at 23?? Taylor and Stevens halfway down the list?? was this list compiled by monkeys?
Yoshimi vs. The Pink Robots is a good album, Broken Sparrow, however, did not cover the title song very well.
The first song on the album "Fight Test" sounds alot like Cat Stevens' "Father and Son", which is a good segue into the injustice Evan has put his finger on. I think some of the artists are too high on the list (ie. Sufjan Stevens), not because they are bad songwriters, I love most of them. However, they have not withstood the test of time (Sufjan Stevens over Cat Stevens seems a little premature).
I was glad to see Joni Mitchell at number 9. Rolling Stone magazine seems a little sexist to have Blue as the first album by a female (other than Fleetwood Mac's Rumours) on the top 500 albums list appearing at number 30. Blue should have been at least in the teens or 20s. I'm glad to see that Paste had her in the top 10.
